Parashat Naso: My drasha for Leah and Benyamin

When I first looked at the reading this afternoon, the first subsection of Parashat Naso, my ‎first thought was, “Couldn't I have picked a better week?” Naso is not only the longest ‎single Torah reading in the cycle but also one of the most detailed and repetitive. It also ‎contains the only instance in which the written Torah devotes more than a single verse the ‎institution of marriage. Unfortunately that section, the ordeal of the wayward wife (Num. ‎‎5:11-31), is precisely what I don't want to talk about today. There is one glimmer of light and ‎we'll get back to it in a moment. Yet, when I stepped back, so to speak, and looked at the ‎forest rather than the trees, I realized that the portion in its entirety can be seen as a ‎reflection of married life of the whole. We hope and pray for it to be long but know that ‎most of its days, weeks and months are filled with repetitive, practical details that challenge ‎us to remember why we chose to be here at all. There are also truly lousy moments when all ‎we can do is grasp at straws and hope to come out together on the other side. Occasionally, ‎there are beautiful times, emotional highlights that provide the strength and love to keep ‎on going. The highlight in our portion is a threefold, priestly blessing: ‎
The Eternal bless thee, and keep thee; ‎
The Eternal make His face to shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee; ‎
The Eternal lift up His countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. (Numbers 6:23-26)‎
As befits its poetic nature, reams of commentary have been written on this blessing. Don't ‎worry I'm not planning a comprehensive review, not even of the interpretations I like, just a ‎few that seem fitting for Leah and Benyamin to take with them on their way.‎

Many commentators ask why “keep you” is necessary after “bless you?” If a person is ‎blessed by God, what more does he or she need? Isn’t the additional protection superfluous. ‎No, it is not. In the words of Rabbi Naphtali Tzvi Yehuda Berlin (1816-1893, Russia and ‎Poland), “Everyone receives the blessing appropriate to their circumstances, knowledge to ‎the student or success in commerce to the businessperson, etc. and everyone needs ‎protection so that the blessing does not become an obstacle, leading to excessive pride or ‎improper use.” ‎

There are many interpretations of the word translated here as “be gracious unto thee.” One ‎opinion in Numbers Rabbah (date of compilation disputed, 9th-12th century) connects it to ‎the fourth paragraph in the weekday Amida prayer where the same root appears in “You ‎graciously grant humans knowledge and teach understanding to mortals” making the ‎blessing a prayer for knowledge and understanding while another comprehends the word as ‎a mutual form and specifies the content of that knowledge, “Give them the knowledge to be ‎gracious unto each other.” According to this interpretation the blessing is more prescriptive ‎than promissory. Perhaps the verse as a whole means that God’s face will shine on those ‎who are gracious to each other. ‎

In his commentary on the third verse, Rabbi Isaac Arama (c. 1420-1494, Spain)  stresses that ‎‎“peace” is not merely the absence of argument and contention but “the essential, common ‎good that joins people together.” ‎

Taken together, we have the elements that combine to form the good times that are the ‎backbone of a healthy marriage: appropriate blessings and the wisdom to use them ‎properly, mutual respect and peace that is more than the absence of argument but rather ‎extends to an all-encompassing, common good. ‎
Leah and Benyamin, may you have many years together and may you learn to draw strength ‎and blessing from each other and from the peak experiences you share so you can traverse ‎the other stuff in peace.‎

Al HaNissim for Yom Ha‘Atzmaut: A case study in liturgical development in our day

Writing new liturgy is a wonderful exercise in what we used to call "values clarification." Deciding how to frame an event, what to include, what to emphasis and what to omit, forces the writer to confront his or her true beliefs about the meaning of the event.

Masorti (Conservative) and Reform prayer books of the last generation often include an Al Hanisim ("For the miracles") prayer from Israel Independence Day, similar to the prayers recited on Hanukkah and Purim.

For example, Ve’ani Tefillati has:

In the days of the second return to Zion, when the Arab nations surrounded Your people in the Land of Israel saying to them, “Let us destroy this nation and eradicate the memory of Israel,” You, in Your great mercy, stood by them in time of trouble. You defended them and vindicated them. You taught them the ways of war (Ps. 144:1) and delivered the strong into the hands of the weak, many into the hands of the few, and the evil into the hands of the people of Your covenant. You made a great and holy Name for Yourself in Your world and for Your people Israel you wrought great salvation and redemption to this day.

The Israeli Reform Avoda Shebelav

In the days of the second return to Zion, when the remnant from the valley of killing and Your people from throughout their dispersion came, evil people controlled our holy land and locked the gates before the pursued. Then seven nations arose to annihilate Your people Israel and You, in Your great mercy, stood by them in time of trouble, to gather together to protect themselves and train themselves to fight. You delivered the many into the hands of the few, and the wicked into the hands of those who keep Your covenant, making a great and holy name for Yourself in Your world and bringing great deliverance and rescue, as in this time.
Afterwards, Your children gathered to rebuild Your land and be rebuilt in it. They established this Independence Day as festival of happiness to give thanks and praise to Your great name. As You made miracles for the first ones, do the same for later ones and save us in our day as You did in theirs.                                                                                           [translation SMZ]

In the days of the ingathering of the remnant of Israel from the lands of darkness and the shadow of death to their beloved inheritance, pioneers of the nation arose, raised the flag, composed a declaration, and claimed the right of the nation to be established with its own consent, as a Jewish government in the land of its birth. With song and dance, women and children, the old and the young, celebrated on the streets with joy and rejoicing. At that same time, their enemies converged forthwith, to eliminate all trace of Israel from the land, and to push into the sea all the keepers of its faith. But You hurried forth to rescue your nation. You strengthened the hands of their defenders, and destroyed the weapons of their enemies. A revival of glory you made, a country of beauty you established, the beginning of the longing of the generations, a refuge and a fortress for the return of all Your people.

In honor of Parashat Terumah: A look at Hod veHadar's sanctuary:

The main colors in  the Aron Kodesh(ark), parochet (ark curtain) and table cloth are gold and blue, which are reminiscent of the colors used in the Mishkan (Tabernacle).

The Ark, was donated by Eliezer (of blessed memory) and Leah Tal in memory of their son Tzachi. It is topped by a crown of seraphim (angels) which was controversial but permitted because they don’t have faces. The front of the ark doors (which we don't usually see, because they are open during services) features a diagram of the sefirot tree, which is the Kabbalists' attempt to portray and organize the complexity of the universe: everything is interconnected. Alongside this very mystical symbol is one of the clearest statements of Torah's ethical vision:
He has told you, O man, what is good;
And what does the Lord require of you
But to do justice, to love kindness,
And to walk humbly with your God?
(Micah 6:8)
Not visible in the picture, to the left, is a depiction of the Ten Commandments (in memory of Ben Welber who made the Ten Commandments on the old ark that is now in the library, designed and crafted by his daughter Rachel Rowen). Traditionally the commandments are shown divided into two sets of five; five relating to the relationship between God and humanity and five relating to interpersonal relationships. This reflects a similar attempt to balance different religious and human paths.

This menorah (in memory of Oved and Mira's son Matan Devora; also the work of Rachel Rowen) is formed by chains pulling down and flames reaching higher

To me, each piece separately and the whole together represents the striving to achieve a balance between different aspects of religious striving and human involvement, as well as the tension between sorrow, memory and choosing life.

Delivering God’s Love for the Stranger
